Towards the end of the semester, the course also drew to a close. Through this course, I really learned many learning modes and concepts that I had never been exposed to before. The articles of the last two weeks have also inspired me a lot. I have summarized three concepts and ideas that I think are important and useful。

The first point, express in a sentence is that “learners learn differently”. I think this idea is very new and important. I remember growing up, I always had to learn in a way that suited the style of the teacher, not the style of the student. In my opinion, education is not a large group of students sitting in the classroom, the teacher tells them again and again what they should do to comply with the rules, how they should be an excellent student. We should make sure that the goal of education is to support the potential of learners to learn, not to stifle it. The most effective way to learn is to ensure that all learners have access to the information in the course content in the best way that best suits them. Everyone has different ways to explore and receive information. Relying solely on teacher-center education without listening to the views of learners, this kind of education is not creative and colorless. I think education is just a function of guidance and cultivation, giving students a correct goal and direction and handing over the rest to them.

The second is the freedom of learning. In today’s context, schools have to transform all face-to-face education into online education, which is a great challenge and innovation for schools, teachers and students. Without the limitation of time and place, we can learn anytime and anywhere. It is also a test of our self-consciousness, thus greatly enhancing the flexibility of learning. In my opinion, this is actually a kind of asynchronous learning, in which students learn in the same direction, but in different ways and in different time dimensions. This flexible learning model also enhances the learner’s potential.

Last but not least, online education usually combines many media, such as text, video, audio, etc. I found that I could concentrate more on online courses than face-to-face lectures because the resources are often more compact. The point of an online course is not to hold your hand and teach you what to learn, but to guide you in a direction that you can learn on your own terms. For example, when I taught the course face to face, one class lasted 120 minutes, and the professor spent almost 100 minutes on PPT. The boring words and long videos made it difficult for me to devote myself to it, on the other hand, Every week, the professor of our online course would like to say something to us or give us the instructions for this week’s course through video or text. The video lasts 2-3 minutes, and the text is no more than 200 words. It usually takes 5-10 minutes to understand the goal of this week’s study easily. I think this is the most attractive part of the online course. What’s more, I think video is more efficient than words, and video is more vivid by stimulating our vision and hearing.

The two concepts that I want to spend more time understanding are the learning disabilities that learners face. One is language or cultural preferences, but rather environmental constraints. Uvic is also a culturally diverse school with students from all over the world. I think if the school wants to further address learning disabilities, what measures should the school take?
